The Middle Daughter by Chika Unigwe is a novel set in contemporary Enugu, Nigeria, that reimagines the myth of Hades and Persephone within a Nigerian family context. The story centers on Nani, the middle daughter of a once close-knit family, whose life unravels following the successive deaths of her elder sister, Udodi, and their father.
Overwhelmed by grief and feeling alienated from her mother and younger sister, Ugo, Nani becomes susceptible to the influence of Ephraim, an itinerant preacher. He offers her solace and a sense of belonging, but their relationship soon deteriorates into an abusive marriage, isolating Nani further from her family.
Trapped and disheartened, Nani must summon the courage to reclaim her life and protect her children. The novel delves into themes of loss, grief, vulnerability, and the resilience required to overcome personal adversity.
